“I have always believed that animals should be treated and cared for with compassion and love, and not just because they are living creatures just like us. We depend on them for many reasons, including companionship and animal guide services,” says George Mason University’s New Century College (NCC) senior Jahida Nasser.
Jahida and fellow NCC student Grace Leem visited the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria shelter on March 13, 2012, as part of an NCLC 391 (Introduction to New Century College) service project.
“The humane treatment of animals at the shelter surprised me,” Jahida says. She was amazed to learn that over two hundred volunteers visit the shelter to walk dogs, “socialize” cats, and assist with other tasks. “The volunteers’ generosity toward these animals motivated me to volunteer more often, not just at animal shelters, but anywhere that will bring a meaningful and positive impact to our community.”
A Bachelor of Science in Integrative Studies-Life Sciences: Pre-Dental Concentration major, Jahida transferred to NCC in fall of 2011. She says, “When I realized that NCC’s integrative studies and experiential learning opportunities would allow me to incorporate my varied interests into my studies, I wished that I had discovered NCC sooner!”
Her internship experience at a dentist’s office this past fall helped Jahida feel more confident about her decision to pursue a career as a dentist or other type of health care professional. For her next NCC internship, she hopes to work at a hospital or counseling center in order to explore other health care professions. Whatever profession she ultimately decides to pursue, Jahida believes that her NCC integrative studies experience will provide a foundation for success.
