Section Information for Fall 2013
Human activities are causing hundreds of diverse biological species (“biodiversity”) to go extinct each year. This alarming rate of biodiversity loss places the long-term health and survival of all species, including humans, at risk because of the interconnectedness of all life on our planet. Humans need to be responsible for reversing this trend; sustaining species outside of their native habitat (“ex situ conservation”) is one of the many ways to protect species from extinction. This course will investigate the challenges involved in managing ex situ biodiversity, as well as the educational and research opportunities these species provide. Students will gain their knowledge through behind-the-scenes visits to local ex situ conservation organizations such as the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, National Aquarium, U.S. Botanic Gardens, and National Zoological Park, including an overnight stay in Baltimore. *$125-150 course fee (in addition to tuition)Course Information from the University Catalog
