A Symposium on Censorship and the Persecution of Latinas

Our Lady of Controversy  The Symposium on Censorship and the Persecution of Latinas will feature LA-based Chicana artist Alma Lopez and UCLA professor and author Alicia Gaspar de Alba. The symposium is part of the 2-week exhibit of Alma Lopez's controversial representation of the Virgin of Guadalupe, which will be on display at the MCL department main office in the Aquia building, 3rd floor, from March 25th to April 5th.  The symposium includes a screening of I Love Lupe (2011), a documentary about the Our Lady controversy, followed by a discussion with Mason students and faculty, and a bilingual English-Spanish guided tour of the exhibition, all with the artist. Later in the afternoon, UCLA professor and author Alicia Gaspar de Alba will lecture on the persecution of Latinas linking her research and creative writing on the murder and persecution of women at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The symposium and art exhibit are open to Mason faculty, staff, and students as well as the general public.  This event is being sponsored by the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, New Century College, Global Interdisciplinary Programs, University Life, Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Multicultural Education, and Women and Gender Studies.

Symposium Schedule

12pm-1:15pm: Documentary I Love Lupe.  Followed by a panel discussion with filmmaker and artist Alma Lopez, Profs. Vivancos Perez and Lisa Rabin (Mason), and Diana Gumbar (Georgetown U)

1:30pm-2:15pm: Bilingual English/Spanish guided tour of the Art Exhibit with Alma Lopez, led by SPAN 370/481 students

3pm-4pm: "Revenge of the Bad Girls: Sor Juana, the Salem Witches, las Maqui-Locas, and Our Lady of Controversy." A Lecture by Alicia Gaspar de Alba, UCLA Prof. and award-winning author

4:15pm-5pm: Book Signing and Reception at the Women and Gender Studies Center, JC 240K
