Peru Clean Water Project Fundraiser

Please join us for a day of well-being activities to help raise funds to bring clean water, sanitation and hygiene to Maijuna indigenous communities in the Peruvian Amazon. There are only 400 Maijuna indigenous people left on earth in the Peruvian Amazon. Today, their communities suffer from dysentery and other deadly waterborne diseases, which are caused by contaminated water. George Mason University students will be teaching community members how to build and maintain biosands water filters — a tried and true method that has been successfully implemented worldwide.

Schedule of Events

10:00 AM: Meditation (Michael Galvin)
Mindfulness meditation is an ancient Buddhist practice that has been adopted by western culture due to its undeniable holistic benefits. It is a research-based type of meditation that utilizes ancient Buddhist practices to achieve states of awareness of self which leads to calming of the mind and emotions for increased psychological and cognitive clarity.

11:00 AM: Yoga for Well-Being (Kimberly Martin)
“Yoga for Well-Being” is a hatha yoga class carefully themed to deepen one’s experience of an interdisciplinary approach to yoga. This practice includes precise instruction in beginning and intermediate level postures, breathing practices, and guided relaxation. Modifications will be offered to individualize the practice. You will need to bring your own yoga mat and any props you need. All are welcome. Let the instructor know at the beginning of class if this is your first yoga practice or if you have any serious physical limitations.

12:00 PM: Tai Chi (Ryan Sealove)
This 45-minute practice will consist of Qigong and Tai Chi exercises and gentle stretching. The mindful quality of these movements will be the main focus of instruction. Each practice will begin with a brief introduction around the principles of these practices and participants will move their bodies from the inside out. Please wear stretchy clothes for your comfort.

1:00 PM: Strengths-Based Activity (Rashaan Mateen)
The Gallup StrengthsFinder Assessment is FREE of charge to all Mason students, faculty and staff as part of the Well-Being University Initiative to make Mason a model well- being university. StrengthsFinder is a discovery tool to help participants identify their top five strengths along with innovative ways to use them in everyday life. By focusing on strengths, participants will learn what they are best at doing and how to leverage these strengths. This activity session will bring this assessment to life! 2:00 PM: Storytelling (Mike Gilmore)
Join Prof. Mike Gilmore and Mason students as they discuss the clean water, sanitation, and hygiene project that they are conducting in the Peruvian Amazon with the Maijuna indigenous group. Learn more about the challenges that the Maijuna are facing and the empowering, community-based work that is helping to improve the health and well-being of their communities. First hand stories will be shared as well as time for questions.

4:00 PM: Pilates (Deanna Busteed)
Pilates is a form of exercise, developed by Joseph Pilates, which emphasizes the balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility, and awareness in order to support efficient, graceful movement. The six principles of pilates are concentration, control, center, flow, precision, and breathing. You will need to bring your own yoga mat and any props you need. All are welcome. Let the instructor know at the beginning of class if this is your first time taking pilates or if you have any serious physical limitations.
