Nance Lucas

Nance Lucas is the Associate Dean and Associate Professor of New Century College at George Mason University and former Special Assistant to the Provost and director of the Academy of Leadership at the University of Maryland.  Dr. Lucas is an Adjunct Faculty member with The Gallup Organization and an Affiliate Faculty member of the Robert Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland.  She received a Ph.D. in College Student Personnel with a concentration in Leadership Studies and Ethics at the University of Maryland; a master’s degree in College Student Personnel Administration, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Industrial Psychology both from The Pennsylvania State University.  Her research and scholarship interests focus on ethics and leadership.

While at the Academy of Leadership, she developed partnerships with both private and public sectors, dedicated to improving the quality of leadership in organizations and communities.  Her leadership at the Academy resulted in the establishment of national and international networks, the creation of various academic initiatives including an honors living-learning program in public leadership, newly endowed scholarships, executive education programs, and an award winning Web site that averaged 1.5 million hits per month.

Nance is the co-author of Exploring Leadership: For College Students Who Want To Make A Difference (1st and 2nd editions), an undergraduate leadership textbook published by Jossey-Bass Publishers and author of chapters in edited books.  She currently serves as the co-editor of the Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies for special issues and a member of the Journal’s Editorial Board.  She has published on topics of leadership, and was a contributing author of Leadership Reconsidered and The Social Change Model of Leadership Development.  With her goal of improving the quality of leadership in organizations and communities, Nance is a keynote speaker, leadership development facilitator, and leadership coach to numerous organizations and clients.  Her expertise includes leadership program development and evaluation.

Nance served as the creator and convener of the 1997 Global Leadership Week Program (a world-wide leadership program initiative that spanned five continents), co-founder of the National Leadership Symposium, and a past chair of the National InterAssociation Leadership Project.  Nance was a faculty member at the National LeaderShape Institute in Illinois a faculty member and assistant conference coordinator at the 1995 Salzburg Leadership Seminar in Salzburg, Austria.  She served on the W. K. Kellogg Foundation Leadership Studies Project Ethics Focus Group, W. K. Kellogg Foundation College Age Youth Leadership Program Review Team, the Kellogg Forum on Higher Education National Dialogue Series Planning Team, the International Leadership Association Board and the Education and Institutional Renewal Advisory Committee for the Association of American Colleges and Universities.  Prior to becoming Director of the Academy of Leadership, Nance was the co-founder and first director of the National Clearinghouse for Leadership Programs.
