Program Requirements
All New Century College students
pursuing an Integrative Studies (INTS) major must meet the university's
requirements for graduation (120 semester credit hours of work, including
45 hours of upper level university work) and fulfill NCC's requirements
for graduation. The curriculum encourages students to meet those
requirements through individual planning, active learning, and close
collaboration with curriculum advisors and faculty mentors.
Students who complete NCC's first-year experience (known as Division I of the curriculum) satisfy the majority
of their general education requirements within their first year of study.
Through their participation in interdisciplinary learning
communities (known as Division II of the curriculum), students in
small groups explore issues from multiple perspectives and academic
disciplines and support their interdisciplinary
concentrations (known as Division III of the curriculum).
In every NCC learning community,
faculty emphasize various core competencies (such as critical thinking, information technology fluency, and group
interaction) that students need to put the knowledge they gain in the
classroom into practice in the world. Integrative Studies students
are required to complete 24 credits of learning communities. In addition,
NCC students integrate 12 hours of hands-on experiential
learning into their degree (through internships, study abroad, community
leadership, etc.) as preparation for the workplace and for dynamic,
responsible citizenship.
In their first semester as seniors,
INTS majors take a synthesis course, the Senior Capstone Seminar, to
reflect on, and analyze, their college education. Each student then
publishes the results of that individual reflection in a final graduation
portfolio, which s/he then discusses in depth with a faculty member.
(NCLC 491 "Senior Capstone" does not earn Learning Community
credit).
