New Century College

Welcome from our Dean

It is my pleasure to welcome you to New Century College (NCC) at George Mason University.  A college within a college, NCC is housed in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.  An outstanding attribute of NCC is our talented and diverse students, faculty, and staff.  Our undergraduate students pursue academic concentrations including Conservation Studies, Education, Organizational Administration, International Studies, and Internet & New Media to name a few.  Our students have earned the reputation as the most visible student leaders on campus, holding key positions in student government, the campus newspaper, service organizations, honor societies, and athletic teams and clubs.  New Century College faculty span a wide variety of departments and disciplines, including the Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Life Sciences.  Every year since 1996, at least one faculty member teaching in NCC has won the prestigious University Teaching Excellence Award.

We believe that an Integrative Studies Degree prepares students to solve some of society’s most pressing problems, integrating knowledge and practical experiences from a variety of disciplines and fields.  Our graduates have entered careers in law, government agencies, education, Congressional offices, public relations firms, corporations, and non-profit organizations around the world.  NCC’s motto is Connecting the Classroom to the World.  Our academic and cocurricular programs provide opportunities for students to apply knowledge in practical settings through internships, leadership and service-learning opportunities, and undergraduate teaching and research assistantships.  The Center for Service and Leadership and Center for Field Studies sponsor programs, courses, service-learning experiences, and field trips to places around the world that complement our academic offerings.

As you explore our Web site, you’ll learn about many of our programs, such as NCC’s First Year Experience designed to offer an alternative general education program open to all of Mason’s incoming freshmen.  Our First Year Experience allows students to earn the majority of the University-wide general education requirements in specially designed learning communities.  We also offer a Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies in Zoo-Aquarium Leadership.  I’m proud to introduce you to over a decade of innovation and learning created by our talented faculty, students, and staff.

Sincerely yours,

Nance Lucas, Ph.D
